The birth of Ava DuVernay was on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of an elementary school student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence of an individual juror. In the course of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at the studio that was small. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
